Detection and prevention of diabetes by measuring parameters at the pharmacy
Salvus Health, an Antwerp-based startup, already developed a health platform that allows people to measure medical parameters on themselves during a visit at their pharmacy, and further monitor them at home - possibly assisted by a healthcare provider - via a mobile app. Based on this knowledge and expertise, Salvus Health will now develop a similar programme to detect diabetes. Not only detecting but also raising awareness of pre-diabetes and prompting lifestyle changes. For this, Saluvs Heath works together with pharmacies.
Using the knowledge of pharmacists
Why does Salvus Health rely on pharmacies? According to Philip Van den Bergh, it is a win-win situation. "Pharmacies are facing increasing competition from online players and large chains. They are no longer the only place where you can buy medicines or other medical products, so the added value is diminishing. By offering the Salvus platform, they create value for their customers in a different way. After all, they have a lot of knowledge about illnesses, medications or side effects and can advise people.
The pharmacists' customers, in turn, benefit from the convenience of being able to monitor their own health on a regular basis by simply walking into the local pharmacy. There is a pharmacist in every village. That accessibility is still interesting. Our aim is not to replace the GP, but to give people the tools to take control of their health. Even between visits to the GP."
