- Autumn is busy in Antwerp diamond district: diamond buyers heading for tenders
There is a buzz of activity and energy in the Antwerp Diamond offices as an historically large number of diamond buyers from all over the world are visiting the rough diamond tender sales events in Antwerp.
In September alone, more than 1,800 diamantaires and diamond buyers from major jewellery brands houses came to Antwerp to participate in 8 diamond tenders, representing a total value exceeding 90 million US dollars.
No other diamond centre in the world attracts this many tenders as Antwerp. This is thanks to Antwerp’s premium infrastructure and its strong reputation as the World's Most Trusted Diamond Centre.
Despite the global crisis still affecting the diamond industry, statistics from the Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC) show that Belgian rough diamond imports jumped 60% year on year to 414 million US dollars in July this year.
Ine Tassignon, spokesperson AWDC : “We hope this positive trend will continue into autumn, as diamond mining and tender companies such as Bonas Group, First Element, Burgundy Diamond Mines and Petra Diamonds are planning more tenders in the coming weeks and months. It is essential that we continue to work diligently to secure the existing supply of rough diamonds and grow a new influx. Building strong relations with major diamond-producing countries such as Botswana, Angola and Namibia is essential to achieving this goal.”
