Production of protein through a circular process

Cleantech company Calidris Bio produces a nutritious protein based on CO2 and renewable energy in a circular process. The process produces a protein that can replace fishmeal in food for farmed fish. A much-needed replacement as the oceans are being emptied of fish and the best food for farmed fish is fishmeal, the result of.... fishing. In a pilot project, Calidris Bio is investigating whether this protein - possibly supplemented with vegetable oil - can completely replace fishmeal, and whether it additionally contributes to the growth and health of farmed fish.

How is your innovation making a difference?

Lieve Hoflack: "The great strength is that we can produce food without the need for agriculture. We even do this in a carbon-negative way: we use less nutrients, less land and less water than the conventional agriculture. We produce an alternative source of food to fall back on if climate change puts even more pressure on agriculture.

We go for an impactful solution. The industry can make profit on this."
